Austin's Birthday!

Coming into the month of November, I knew that I would have to make a concerted effort to celebrate Austin's birthday because I was due only a few days beforehand. Well, Owen came early enough that I had a few weeks after he was born to try to prepare to make Austin's day special. We celebrated a day early with a night out at Texas de Brazil (like Tucano's, but more meat and less veggies). We took Owen with us, and he slept the entire time while Austin consumed his weight in meat. I managed to try most of the meat offerings that were at least medium well done. It was great to go out on a date- thanks mom for watching Landon!

The next day was Austin's actual birthday. I finally convinced him that he should get a new phone- he's had the same smart phone since June of 2012, before Landon was born. I guess that is a testament to how well he takes care of things that his phone still worked just fine. He did want a phone with dual SIM cards so that he could use his phone overseas with foreign SIM cards while still keeping his T-Mobile coverage so he could communicate with me. Basically, it made it so that when we go back to traveling, Austin no longer has to walk around with two phones in his pocket. Hooray! We were so blessed that Austin was able to take three weeks off after Owen was born, and his birthday landed during that time. He spent the afternoon cuddling with his boys while I made him an epic cake.

Birthday boy!
Because of his special meaty dinner the night before, Austin didn't care what he had for his birthday dinner, all he wanted was an ice cream cake. I had previously made him an ice cream cake, so I decided to do that again, and try to make it an ice cream sundae cake. I baked a devil's food cake mix, and froze a vanilla ice cream with chocolate fudge ribbon into the shape of the cake by freezing it in the cake pan. My mistake was using an ice cream with a fudge ribbon because it did not freeze up as well as last time and made the whole cake unstable! I made a homemade caramel sauce and put it in between the layers, and did a chocolate ganache over the top. Chopped Snickers bars garnished the top, along with whipped cream, maraschino cherries, and more drizzled caramel sauce. It was definitely a rich cake! Although it did not stay upright very well, it was delicious and Austin approved.
Landon was super excited for Austin to open his gift!

I let Landon choose a gift for Austin this year. Landon decided to get Daddy some soap. I took him to Walmart and we smell-tested many different kinds of soap. Landon chose his two favorites and we wrapped them up. Austin thought it was hilarious that Landon had selected soap for his gift.

Party hats!
Owen slept through the entire thing.
Yay for birthday boxes!
Next up, we opened up Austin's birthday box from his parents. Grandma Ev sends the best boxes for every holiday, and the birthday box did not disappoint. We had party hats, confetti, and celebration blowers. Even Owen got in on the celebration!
Right after his first bath!
If Austin's birthday wasn't enough excitement, Owen's umbilical cord fell off so we were able to give him a real bath instead of a sponge bath. He loved the water, and only cried when he had to get out! When we wash his hair, it gets incredibly light and fluffy and stands straight out from his head. It is so fun to have a baby with hair!
