The Beauties of a Backyard, and California Fun!

My little fireman!
We spent two weeks in California after returning from China. Landon thoroughly enjoyed doing all things little boy- tromping around the backyard digging in the dirt, dressing up in his new fireman costume, a birthday gift from Grandma and Grandpa, and trying his hand at riding a bike for the first time. It was wonderful to spend some time with my sister, Hannah, before she departed for her LDS church mission to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Spanish speaking. She is so awesome and is going to be the best missionary! Landon loves his Aunt Claire, who is still enough of a kid to have a ton of fun with Landon on the trampoline, on the swings, and playing pretend in the backyard! Of course, hanging out with grandparents and Aunt Net was also great.

Landon has been asking to get a bike/learn to ride a bike for months. I told him Grandpa was going to find him a bike that was his size (with five kids' worth of stuff at our house, I knew there must be a bike Landon's size!) The bike was slightly big for him, but he was able to get the hang of pedaling and steering, although not necessarily at the same time. The handy bar on the back made it so we didn't have to bend down to keep him balanced- a welcome feature for the grandparents and fairly pregnant mama!

It was surprisingly cool during our first week in California, which meant that we didn't venture out to our pool. It did finally heat up closer to the time when we were really busy with my grandma's memorial and Hannah's missionary farewell, so we didn't get to use the pool as much as we would have liked, but Landon did go swimming one day. The pool was in the high 70s, so Landon went for little dips followed by long periods warming up on the deck. He managed to have fun with Aunt Claire and Aunt Hannah anyway.

Fishing in the pool
There was a specific patch of my parent's garden in their side yard where Landon played with his trucks. He made all kinds of things in that little patch of dirt, including an air strip. If he disappeared from view, most likely he was in this dirt spot. It was difficult to get him to come inside sometimes! The dogs did a great job watching out for him, and he did a pretty good job being gentle to the dogs.

I like to make cool cakes for Landon's birthday. Well, his birthday was in August, when we were still in China. I did not want to even attempt to make a cake there, so we purchased one from a bakery and called it good. I still wanted to make a cool cake, though, so I asked Landon what kind of cake he wanted (airplane cake!) and we had a mini birthday celebration for him in California. Hannah was my consultant and decorator extraordinaire as we made a Dusty cake from the movie Planes. As we were constructing it, Landon came over and observed that Dusty did not have a propeller. I just told him that Dusty didn't need a propeller because he was not going to fly, he was going to be eaten. Then, Landon complained that Dusty did not have wheels. My response was similar. Aunt Hannah came to the rescue and fashioned a propeller out of some twist ties and wheels out of a few extra Oreos we had on hand. We were really excited with how it turned out, and even more excited that it was actually a delicious cake!

It was so fun to be able to see Claire perform with the high school band while we were in town. She even has a solo in their field show! Landon liked watching the football games and running around with Grandpa and Greg. He also sat with Claire during parts of the game while she played in the pep band in the stands! I don't think I've been to a high school football game since I was in the high school band, so it brought back fond memories for me of my fun times in band. They played several pep band songs that the band started playing when I was in band, so that was great to hear!
