O the 8-Month-Old

This baby is growing up WAY too fast. With Landon, I was looking forward to him getting bigger and hitting every milestone. I was so excited with each new development. With Owen, I'm shocked at all that he is able to do as an eight-month-old, and time is flying by! I just want him to stay my baby forever! I guess that's life as a mother, though. Anyway, Owen goes by many nicknames around here: O, O-wee, O-wee-O, and O-gabow (Landon's go-to). Landon also calls him a naked mole rat every time I change Owen's clothes (because of a book we read, I think?) This little guy continues to light up the room, and charm everyone around with his frequent and face-brightening smiles. His hair is getting really light- at this point it is almost a strawberry blonde color, definitely light auburn. I'm not sure if that is from the sun or just growing up. He has a patch of really long hair in front, and on the back of his head. I'm not sure when we'll cut it, but I'm not quite ready yet!
 His eyes, forehead, and cheeks continue to look more like my side of the family (specifically, Hannah) but something about his nose and mouth these days really reminds me of Austin when he smiles. It will be interesting to see what he looks like as he grows up. His eyes are still gray, but change depending on what he's wearing. Owen popped some teeth just before hitting the 8-month mark. He cut his top left and right bottom tooth at about the same time. We are SOOO happy because he's been working on those bad boys for months, it seems. He is currently cutting his bottom left tooth, and it looks like his right top tooth will not be far behind. Physically, he slimmed down this month, but is still a big boy and wearing 18 month clothes. What's nice about being here, in Korea, is that everything is line dried, so his clothes are growing right along with him!

Owen started being much more vocal this month. Before, he could say "mama!" very well, but not really anything else. Now he says "dada" and "anda" (Landon). He has three voice tones that he uses at different times. When he's content/excited/shooting the breeze with himself in the stroller, he speaks in a high, squeaky little voice. His normal/sad/mad/"MOM! SAVE ME!" voice is pretty low for a baby, and then he has this hilarious, somewhat evil sounding gravelly growl that he does when he is super excited about something, or trying to get to Austin. In the mornings, when he wakes up and wants to wake Austin up, he crawls over to him saying, "Dadadadada" this growling voice that we just can't resist. I think he can say more words, because I hear him say actual words sometimes, but that's all I've been able to pick out so far. It was so cute, one day last week Owen woke up early, and wanted to play. Landon actually slept in a little, so Owen was moving around our bed calling, "ANDA! ANDA!" as loud as he could. When Landon woke up and came in, his face lit up and he laughed and said, "Anda!"
Getting in some casual reading...
Speaking of Landon, Owen ADORES his big brother. No one can make Owen laugh like Landon can. They have started wrestling on the bed recently (really, it's just Landon rolling him around) but Owen LOVES it. He giggles and growls and loves to play rough with his brother. I see many tussles on the floor in our future. I just hope Owen gets big fast so he can defend himself! Owen also loves to play with Landon's toys, much to Landon's chagrin. He's learning to share and trade- since Owen doesn't really care which exact car he plays with or eats right now. They are getting along better, and Landon has been a huge help keeping Owen safe and out of our icky wet bathroom.

Attacking the camera whilst taking 8 month photos...
 Owen is a mover! He still gets around mostly on his belly, pulling himself along with a double arm army crawl. He learned how to transition from his belly to sit, and does these transitions quite smoothly. He spends more time on his hands and knees, rocking back and forth and has started moving forward on hands and knees, but at this point, scooting is way faster, so he resorts to that most of  the time. He is FAST! Landon and I got a fun surprise the other day when Owen scooted over to a very low table and pulled himself up to standing on it while we were out of the room. This is the first time he had ever stood up without assistance! What a stud. Soon after his first standing attempt, Owen started pulling to stand on everything in sight, and even letting go with one hand and cruising along the low table. He is a super strong boy and it's time to super-baby proof!

Looking at books...

Owen's fine motor control has improved enough where he can grab most things off of his high chair tray, and manipulate board book pages. There was a period of time during his eighth month where he REFUSED to be fed anything with a spoon. He clamped his mouth shut, shook his head "no", and batted away any spoonfuls of food that came near his mouth. He typically eats a ton of food, so we were trying to figure out what the problem was, but I think he was just really wanting to practice feeding himself. He started the month gagging on even tiny bits of solid food, and now he eats all sorts of finger foods like a champ. I'm not sure if I'm ready for him to do this, but I think he would have starved by now if I did not at least offer these things. I think part of the problem was that I was offering him a puree with broccoli in it. I don't think the kid likes broccoli. He eats all sorts of other things, though, including squash of all types, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, corn, cheese, plain yogurt, apples, bananas, pears, plums (his favorite!), and mixtures of all of those put together! He also ate tofu and loves little bites of meatballs and pizza. These are not things I typically would give an eight month-old baby, but he was begging for them and lunging so furiously I gave in and he loved it. He was teething this month, and so I think he was looking specifically for things to chomp on. Frozen blueberries and cold watermelon were favorite teething devices this month, in one of the mesh holder thingies.

Only clear pictures of the 8 month tie, he is not looking!

Heart= melted

Pondering
With Owen being dramatically more mobile this month, and asserting his independence in the feeding department, we saw a different side of our sweet little guy this month. He is a DETERMINED little fellow. He is goal-oriented and goes after what he wants. He is still overwhelmingly happy and such a joy, but it was fun to see that little stubborn streak. I'm sure in a year or two, it won't be quite as cute, but we're enjoying every day with our Owen boy!

P.S. Sorry for the picture overload, but each picture captures a little piece of this little guy's personality.
